“Son of a bitch!” McGruder said. “We need to—”

“Shut up. We’ll talk about what to do about him later. Right now we have to follow him. We have to find out where he’s staying.”

They could see DeMarco strolling away from the restaurant as if he didn’t have a worry in the world. McIntyre took off after him, walking on the opposite side of the street, hanging back about half a block. DeMarco stopped at a stand that sold fish tacos. He bought a couple of tacos, took a seat at a picnic table, and ate them slowly while looking out at the ocean. He never once looked in McIntyre’s direction.

DeMarco finished his lunch, tossed a paper plate and a couple of napkins into a waste container, and ambled across the street to a parking lot.

McIntyre, half a block away, was partially hidden by a booth where you could buy tickets for Key West tours. McGruder was waiting in McIntyre’s car near the bar where they’d been drinking. McIntyre called his partner, told him where he was, and said, “Bring the car up. He just headed into a parking lot, which I’m guessing is where he’s parked.”

“Roger that,” McGruder said.

A couple of minutes later, McIntyre watched DeMarco pull out of the parking lot in a small blue sedan. McGruder pulled up in McIntyre’s Cadillac, and McIntyre joined McGruder in the car. He pointed and said, “That little blue Ford up there.”

McGruder hit the gas and followed DeMarco.

Emma followed McIntyre and McGruder.
